A simple new breast cancer test combines thermal imaging and AI. It is hoped that this will make breast cancer detection more accessible in places where mammograms aren't easily available or considered intrusive.
In India, half of women with breast cancer don't survive it. An Indian women, Nirami, thought of combining thermal cameras with AI to make breast cancer detection more accessible to Indian women. It is a privacy, avare, radiation-free test. The test is also very portable, it can be taken to homes, buses, vans, etc. The camera creates a heat map of the breast. These images are compared with lots of others using AI. If it detects patterns which are typically seen in breast cancer, the woman will be taken into further tests.
So far, Nirami tested over 60 000 women in India. They claim to be 90% accurate but many doctors in West think thermal scans are not reliable. However, it is hoped that this test will reach to people who wouldn't normally reach to any breast cancer test.
