In 2021, more than 3000 swimmers were rescued off the UK coast by Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguards. However, there were still more than 100 accidental fatalities in coastal waters in 2021.
In Southern Wales, a drone that could fly and float on water that could be the new rescuer of swimmers in coastal waters. The drone can release a buoyancy aid out to the sea, to swimmers in need, by a payload release mechanism.
When hundreds of meters away from the shore where every second is vital for the survival of a swimmer in danger, it is very important to find a fast way to bring help. This drone could be the pioneer of drone technology used for this purpose. During a demo, the drone was able to release a buoyancy aid near a women that pretended to be in need of rescue in the sea.
The idea of using drones for this purpose is not intended to replace lifeguards. Lifeguards are perceived to be essential for to give CPR, first aid in serious situations. However, the potential use of drones for this purpose can enhance traditional lifeguarding and can rescue many lives.
